What do the sophisticated coziness of old Vienna, the brash Berlin snark and the racing pulse of New York have in common? What would American culture and "light muse" be without the immigrants from Europe who fled from the Nazis to the USA and found a new home there? What would Hollywood's Golden Era be without Ernst Lubitsch and Billy Wilder, but also without the film music of E. W. Korngold and other emigrants? Without the former European and largely secular Jewish cultural elite, the cultural radiance of the USA in the decades following the Second World War would have been almost inconceivable. Musicians such as Fritz Kreisler and Kurt Weill helped shape cultural life in New York, both in Carnegie Hall and on Broadway. The Trio Varnhagen with soprano Ulrike Cordes builds a bridge from the Old to the New World, taking you on a journey from Vienna and Berlin to New York with virtuosity and wit.
