Bára Gísladóttir: ÓS Daníel Bjarnason: Piano concerto FEAST Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony No. 1 Do you know how many people live in Iceland? About one and a half times as many as Freiburg: around 380,000 (plus around 800,000 sheep ...). The number of artists that this small country has produced and continues to produce is incredible! One of the most successful and charismatic Icelandic musicians of our time is conductor Daníel Bjarnason. His career actually began here in Freiburg, where he studied composition and conducting. In recent years, he has been omnipresent on all the major concert stages: He composes for the big orchestras and conducts all over the world. He also holds a residency with the Iceland Philharmonic Orchestra and is in close contact with an almost unbelievable number of exciting Icelandic composers, whom he supports wherever he can. The program in Freiburg naturally includes one of Bjarnason's own works, namely his 2nd Piano Concerto, which has just had its world premiere. Bjarnason also presents another work by one of those incredibly talented young Icelandic composers, Bára Gísladottír. Her ÓS for large orchestra is about the different meanings of the Icelandic word "ós", which can mean both mouth and mouth. And Bjarnason also continues the story of the symphony: he combines his own piece with Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 1, the piece that brought the 19-year-old composer to the attention of the musical world of revolutionary Russia with a bang. A piece in which Shostakovich's voice is already fully developed, a fast-paced, biting and multi-layered orchestral ride that forces the orchestra and audience to the edge of their seats.
