From June 6 to 9, the St. John's Church in Freiburg will host the Whitsun Festival for the fourth time.
The Whitsun Festival, under the artistic direction of district cantor Stephan Rahn and with the kind support of the Archbishop Hermann Foundation, aims to explore the sound space of St. John's Church in a variety of ways in concerts and services, tracing the tension between spiritual traditions and avant-garde music.
In 2025, the Whitsun Festival will focus on three anniversary composers: Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Arvo Pärt and Bertold Hummel.
The final concert on Monday, June 9 (7 p.m.) will be a premiere, incorporating the parish's Franziskussaal as a concert venue for the first time. Chamber music works by Max Bruch, Bertold Hummel, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Robert Schumann will be performed there to mark the 100th anniversary of Bertold Hummel's birth.
