Day of action against poverty and homelessness
Friday, 17/10/2025 / 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM / Platz der Alten Synagoge (old synagogue square)
How are financial hardship, social exclusion and homelessness connected? What support is available in the city? On this afternoon, local social services for the homeless invite you to an open exchange.
Visitors can find out about services and projects at various stands, talk to specialists or simply chat over a cup of tea. Among others, the beggars' choir of the "Schwerelos" association will be singing. There will also be a speech from the local Benefit association about how sport empowers people in difficult circumstances. Afterwards, Benefit will lead an exercise session for anyone who wants to be a little more active that afternoon.
The Foodsharing association will deliver donated food to the square. Anyone who wants to can take something tasty and enjoy it while chatting with the people at the stands. Participation is free.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty has been held on October 17 since 1992. The United Nations has declared it a day of action to draw attention to people suffering from poverty, violence and hunger. At a local level, the Street Social Work Contact Network of the Office for Social Affairs helps to organize this day. The ten-strong team advises socially disadvantaged people on financial and health issues, accompanies them to the authorities or helps them find work or training. The street workers are regularly out and about on the streets and squares of the city. Further information can be found at https://www.freiburg.de/kontaktnetz
