It does exist, the island of the blessed! At least that's what the knight Ruggiero thinks when he finds himself stranded on Alcina's island and soon falls senselessly in love in her bed. Alcina has everything: beauty, wealth, power and magic. But beware - anyone who is no longer useful to her quickly ends up as an animal or a stone. But for a moment, everything seems to be blissful. Then Ruggiero's fiancée Bradamante turns up on the island. She wants him back and has disguised herself as a man to disguise herself. Alcina's sister promptly falls for the wrong man - or the right woman? Nothing is as it seems and no one can be trusted. Alcina feels threatened and the island of the blessed becomes an extreme danger zone. The beguilingly beautiful music that George Frideric Handel wrote for this opera in 1735 is - like Alcina herself - an event: once you have experienced it, you will be enchanted and never forget it. General Music Director André de Ridder, a passionate specialist for this repertoire, takes over the musical direction and Pia Partum's production team creates a bubble of blissful beauty and delusion in the middle of the desert.
