"By Year and Day. Places in Early Modern Freiburg"

"By Year and Day. Places in Early Modern Freiburg"

The Münsterplatz, the Breisacher Tor or the old monastery courtyards - Freiburg has many historical and well-known places. For twelve years now, the lecture series "Auf Jahr und Tag", organized by the University of Freiburg together with four associations and the city archive, has been dealing with these, and less well-known places.

The sixth edition is dedicated to early modern traces in Freiburg.

It starts on Monday, October 23, with the lecture "Der Peterhof - Klosterhöfe in der Stadt" by Frank Löbbecke and Martin Möhle.

Every two weeks on Mondays at 7 p.m., historians show the spatial structure of early modern Freiburg using exemplary places. Some of these places still exist today, others have since disappeared but have left traces. The lectures are addressed to a broader audience in an easily understandable form.

Not only historical events and persons determine the fate of a city, but also its topography down to individual squares or buildings. From the turn of the 16th century, Freiburg saw the construction of numerous important new buildings, such as Konrad Stürtzel's Stadtpalais, now known as the Basler Hof, or the core buildings of the New Town Hall. They bear witness to the growing self-confidence of Freiburg's citizens.

However, the Thirty Years' War also changed the cityscape: many buildings were damaged or destroyed. Towards the end of the 17th century, Freiburg underwent even more serious changes. The city was rebuilt into a fortified city according to the plans of the famous Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It was not until the middle of the 18th century, when the bastions were demolished, that Freiburg was able to expand again.

The lecture series "On Day and Year" is a joint event of the Freiburg City Archives, the Historical Seminar of the University of Freiburg (Dept. of Regional History), the Studium generale, the Alemannic Institute, the Breisgau Historical Society Schauinsland, the Regional Society of Baden Heritage and the Minster Building Society.

The lectures are offered both in presence and online

They will take place in the Paulussaal (Dreisamstraße 3) at 7 p.m., with the exception of the dates on March 4 and 18, which will be held in Lecture Hall 1010 of the Kollegiengebäude I of the Albert Ludwig University
