Battleground Wisconsin: Behind the Scenes of Political Reporting in 2024

Free entry

How does political reporting work in a heated climate surrounding the US elections in a swing state like Wisconsin? The photographer of the exhibition Battleground Wisconsin Ruthie Hauge and the political editor Erin McGroarty both work for the Capital Times in Freiburg's twin city Madison, Wisconsin. On this Thanksgiving evening, they both talk about their day-to-day work over the past year: about the rallies of the two candidates, the Republican and Democratic party conventions as well as reporting from the polling stations and the post-election phase. Of hostility and expressions of solidarity, of civil courage and social division.

Ruthie Hauge has been the senior photojournalist at the Capital Times since March 2020. Over the course of her career, she has won more than 75 awards for photojournalism.
Erin McGroarty is an Alaska native who joined the Capital Times in May 2023 and covers the Wisconsin state legislature, court system, congressional delegation and elections. Her reporting on Alaska's legislature and congressional delegation has won numerous awards.
