Best Books of 2024

2024 was a political punch in the gut in many respects, from Ukraine to the Middle East to the state elections in eastern Germany - the world is facing very turbulent times. This makes it all the more important to calm down culturally at the end of the year - and to talk about books that have made a lasting impression and inspired us. Which books make it onto our reviewers' personal best list? The Carl Schurz House surfs the wave of popular literature in English on an Advent evening through the year of books in translation: As a literary quartet at a time when people are thinking about suitable gifts, director Friederike Schulte and René Freudenthal from our library will be practising their skills under the title Best Books of 2024. Freudenthal from the program, René Zipperlen, probably the most influential voice in the cultural editorial department of the Badische Zeitung, and Susanne Schmid, bookseller at the traditional Jos Fritz bookshop, will also be taking part. Each participant will bring along a book from the publication year 2024 in German translation as well as a personal literary highlight from the last 12 months. Recommendations on the question of the pre-Christmas shopping list in front of the bookshelves will be provided, and there will be intelligent and controversial discussions.
