Brahms - an autumn

Our mini-festival BRAHMS - EIN HERBST will run throughout the fall. We start our concert season with a special tribute to the great Hamburg composer of the Romantic period. At the heart of the program are his four symphonies. On two consecutive days, the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Brahms' symphonies in two symphony concerts. There will be two symphonies per concert and there will be two conductors per concert, each conducting one of the symphonies: General Music Director André de Ridder and Gerhard Markson will juxtapose their individual interpretations of these symphonic masterpieces, offering the audience direct comparisons of interpretation and allowing the four symphonies to shine in their individuality. During the nine years in which Brahms published his symphonies, his compositional style expanded enormously. His confidence in baroque compositional techniques and his highly romantic style characterize the first two symphonies. Johannes Brahms' classical phase began with the third symphony - a development that we can follow directly in the two symphony concerts. Brahms will accompany us throughout the fall around this symphonic center. We will kick off with an introductory matinee with Prof. Natasha Loges, André de Ridder and Gerhard Markson in a chamber music concert with piano students from the College of Music Freiburg. The Theater Freiburg ensemble will perform an evening of lieder and chamber music from Brahms' extensive oeuvre, and our chamber music series will also focus on Brahms this autumn and beyond. A real feast for Brahms fans and the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to become one.
