Ex-bank robber Gino Strabliggi (Alain Delon) is released on parole and painstakingly builds up a new life for himself despite severe setbacks. He meets the pretty bank employee Lucie, at whose side the future initially seems to give him a chance. But the ambitious detective Goitreau does not believe in Gino's purification and does not let go of him until a provoked relapse destroys all good intentions. The social worker Germain Cazeneuve desperately fights for the life of the condemned man, but the perfectly functioning machinery of justice can no longer be stopped...

An oppressive and gripping mix of social thriller and gangster film. Director José Giovanni spent several years as a petty thief and gun runner - which even landed him behind bars for a time - before launching his career as a writer and director. In 1973, he made this gripping crime film with Jean Gabin and Alain Delon, who were in front of the camera together for the third and last time. Look out for the young Gérard Depardieu in a small supporting role!
