Violin concerto in widescreen sound - 1978 was a memorable year for cineastes: Star Wars" was released in German cinemas. People flocked to the movie theaters and were captivated by the galactic images. Among them: Anne-Sophie Mutter. The star violinist readily admits that she has a particular soft spot for movies. But even more than the images, Mutter says, she was overwhelmed by the music back then - the magnificent soundtrack by John Williams. Almost half a century has passed since her first encounter with Williams' music. In the meantime, the violinist and the legendary film composer have formed a close artistic and personal friendship. The most recent expression of their mutual musical affection is the beguilingly sonorous and highly dramatic 2nd Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by John Williams. Composed especially for Anne-Sophie Mutter" is written above the score. For die-hard Williams admirers, it is no news that he also composes for the concert hall. He's a great composer, no matter what style he writes in," Anne-Sophie Mutter enthuses.

A widescreen sound that manages without film and yet projects a whole round of images onto the inner screen was also Gustav Mahler's specialty. In 1905, he premiered his 5th Symphony, to which the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik attested an "overwhelming abundance of beauty. Almost 70 years later, the symphony also made Mahler a film composer, when Luchino Visconti added the Adagietto of the Fifth to his "Death in Venice". For the first time, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its music director Fabio Luisi, himself one of the great maestri of our time, can be recommended as an expert for the differentiated sound forces of Williams and Mahler. One can look forward to an evening of musical and artistic superlatives.
