Daniel Kehlmann: Lichtspiel - Reading and talk with Karl-Heinz Ott
Thursday, 07/12/2023 / 07:30 PM / Theater Freiburg
Whether ,,Ich und Kaminski," ,,Die Vermessung der Welt" or ,,Tyll" - with each book, the multi-award-winning writer Daniel Kehlmann explores surprising material. His new novel ,,Lichtspiel" (Rowohlt, 2023) centers on the cinema director Georg Wilhelm Pabst. During the Nazi seizure of power, the creator of "Die weiße Hölle vom Piz Palü" (The White Hell of Piz Palü) and "Die Dreigroschenoper" (The Threepenny Opera) was filming in France; he fled to Hollywood to escape the horrors of the new Germany. But under the California sun, the world-famous director is suddenly as small as a dwarf. Not even Greta Garbo, whom he has made immortal, can help. And so Pabst finds himself back in his native Austria, now called Ostmark. The Minister of Propaganda in Berlin wants the film genius, he knows no opposition, and he promises a lot. While Pabst still believes that he will not submit to any dictatorship other than that of art, he has already taken the first step into a hopeless entanglement.
