The House Divided. A history of the United States from 1950 to the present day

Free entry

In the 1950s, the USA was regarded as a model of a stable democracy in which there was a broad consensus on the social and political order. In the 1960s, however, this consensus was shattered in disputes over the Vietnam War and the racial conflict, among other things. In the following decades, globalization, immigration, changing values and the media revolution dramatically changed society and led to a long underestimated surge in polarization and radicalization, which particularly affected the conservative milieu. Today, conservatives and liberals are irreconcilable enemies. American democracy has become a crisis. Historian Manfred Berg tells the story of a progressive division that has led the country to the brink of a new civil war and offers a comprehensive analysis of the current conflicts that have made Donald Trump's rise possible, but will not disappear when he steps down from the political stage.
