Book presentation and discussion with Stephan Lamby, among others ARD | As part of the series "Tipping point: Europe and the USA in 2025"
The well-known German documentary filmmaker Stephan Lamby, who has accompanied various German chancellors, meets his American cousin again at a family celebration. But then he tells him that he was there when the Capitol was stormed. Horrified, Lamby decides to do a special kind of research: he wants to find out why so many people from the traditional middle class, like his relatives, are becoming radicalized right-wing populists. His journey took him to the USA, Argentina, Italy and, of course, Germany. It takes him deep into history, including that of his own family. Many of the conversations are painful, some are conciliatory. Lamby's very personal book sheds light on the dark sides of Western democracies: a good hundred years after the rise of historical fascism and eighty years after its end, the journalist explores the question of whether the term fascism is still suitable for the current political debate. He visited Mussolini's estate and Graceland, Elvis Presley's villa. He observed Argentina's President Javier Milei up close, spoke with his cousin who is enthusiastic about Donald Trump and with a doctor in Gera who is involved with the AfD. Lamby has received numerous awards, including the German Television Prize, the Hanns Joachim Friedrichs Prize, the Stern Prize and Journalist of the Year.
