Annie is in her mid-fifties and begins a relationship with a man thirty years her junior. From his mattress, Annie opens up to a glimpse of her own past: of the young student who was admitted to the hospital across the street more than 30 years ago after an illegal abortion. With unsparing candor, Annie looks back at her former self, her unwanted pregnancy, the gauntlet that led her from doctors to an angel maker who performed the procedure she narrowly survived. Annie Ernaux connects her uneven love affair with her return to the past, finding a language for the humiliations she experienced and the struggle for self-determination that itself becomes an event.
