The Messiah in images and sounds

The Messiah in images and sounds

Price: from 8.00€ to 15.00€

The Catholic Academy of Freiburg invites you to a lecture and guided tour on Monday, December 1 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at the c-Punkt Münsterforum, Herrenstr. 33, Freiburg. The focus will be on George Frideric Handel's "Messiah" in dialog with the pictorial world of Freiburg Minster. After an introduction to Handel's work in the Münsterforum, a tour will lead to selected depictions in the cathedral that take up central motifs of the oratorio.

Even in the large vestibule under the "most beautiful tower on earth" (Jacob Buckhardt), numerous figures from around 1300 can be seen that refer to the coming Messiah. The tympanum above the main portal shows him in three different ways: first coming in Advent, then suffering and resurrecting, and finally returning - flanked by trumpet angels. Handel's three-part oratorio "Messiah" (1741), which will be performed on December 20, 2025 in the Konzerthaus (concert hall) Freiburg with the Freiburg Bach Choir and Orchestra under the direction of Frank Markowitsch, has a similar structure.

Participants on December 1 are Mareike Hartmann (Theology/Art History, Freiburg), Frank Markowitsch (Artistic Director of the Freiburg Bach Choir), Martin Müller (Historical Performance Practice, Freiburg) and Meinrad Walter (Theology/Church Music, Freiburg).

An event organized by the Katholische Akademie Freiburg in cooperation with the c-Punkt Münsterforum Freiburg. Admission is 15 euros, concessions 8 euros and free of charge for under 27s. Please register by November 24 at: www.katholische-akademie-freiburg.de
