The Taming of the Shrew
Wednesday, 14/06/2023 / 07:30 PM - 10:00 PM / Theater Freiburg - Large House
The businessman Baptista has two daughters: the gentle Bianca and the headstrong Catherine. The father sets a condition for Bianca's numerous suitors: First, the older daughter Katharina has to get hitched before the younger Bianca is allowed to marry. But Katharina does not think of submitting to a man. The frustrated suitors for Bianca's favor therefore hire Petruchio, who in exchange for money - lots of money - is willing to marry Katharina away. And once they are in the state of matrimony, Petruchio intends to tame the "Shrew" and make her his submissive wife. Can, will, may this succeed ...? Polish director Ewelina Marciniak spans the Elizabethan era to the present day and contrasts the misogynistic original text with a feminine, feminist perspective. What would the two sisters say today? How can a woman remain true to her beliefs and ideals in a society that continues to be dominated by men? What strategies are available to her in a hierarchically organized professional world - for example, a theater company - to realize herself? DER WIDERSPENSTIGEN ZÄHMUNG actually already had its premiere on Friday, March 13, 2020 - the very first day of the very first lockdown. The day before it was still said that the performance could take place regularly; a few hours before the premiere it was decreed that no audience could be admitted. Only a few (very enthusiastic) critics were present. Since then, Ewelina Marciniak has won the German theater prize FAUST for best director, been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, opened the Salzburg Festival, and begun staging Wagner's RING. Her Freiburg production, which is anything but Corona Rule-compliant, will now finally be shown to audiences: starting April 1, 2023. No joke! Trigger warning Please be advised that the production contains depictions of psychological, physical and sexual violence.
