The beginnings of Günterstal Monastery

The beginnings of Günterstal Monastery

Free entry

The foundation of the Cistercian convent of Günterstal in 1224 coincides with a period of dynamic change in the region. Freiburg, founded in the 12th century, regained its medieval form, the rapidly growing population considerably increased the settlement area through urban expansion and, last but not least, a ring of monasteries for men and women was established in and outside the city. The lecture will place the founding of Günterstal Monastery against the background of this development and explain the specific profile of a Cistercian monastery.
