Marie-Antoinette's bridal journey and the University campus Freiburg
Thursday, 30/10/2025 / 07:00 PM - 08:00 PM / Uniseum (University Museum)
Free entry
Marie-Antoinette, a daughter of Archduchess Marie Theresie, married the Dauphin and later French King Louis XVI with great ceremony in May 1770. The bridal procession from Vienna to Versailles also made a stop in Freiburg. Marie-Antoinette's bridal procession was a major event for the city of Freiburg and its population. The university also took part in the celebrations and used this opportunity to present itself. The tour explores the following questions: What is the connection between Archduchess Marie-Antoinette and the university in the first place? Why was this marriage to the French Dauphin also significant for the university? And how did the university get involved and intervene in the celebrations? We will also explain how the university positioned itself in relation to the later French Revolution and how it participated in the tragic fate of Marie-Antoinette.
A guided tour with Sandra Haas and Melissa Maggiore.
