The Ununited States. The US political system and the future of democracy

Free entry

"E pluribus unum", out of many things one: this is the motto on the seal of the USA. But there is not much left of it. The United States is more divided and hostile than it has been since the Civil War. The main reason for this is the partisan polarization that has now affected all actors, institutions and procedures of American democracy. Stephan Bierling explains how the US political system works and why it is working less and less - with dramatic consequences not only for the USA itself, but also for the future of democracy. This is because conditions in the superpower have changed drastically over the last three decades. Principles that seem self-evident, such as cooperation across party lines, non-partisan federal judges or checks and balances that effectively prevent attacks on democracy, have long been on the brink of collapse. Stephan Bierling, Professor of International Politics and Transatlantic Relations at the University of Regensburg, explores the question of why the mechanics of governance have changed so much and how democracy actually works in the USA today.
