Johann Sebastian Bach composed eleven Christmas cantatas between 1713 and 1742, which were performed during church services on
the three days of Christmas. Bach composed the two cantatas Gelobet seist
du Jesu Christ and Unser Mund sei voll Lachens in the following years 1724 and 1725
during his tenure as Thomaskantor in Leipzig. Both were heard on Christmas Day.
The two cantatas are richly orchestrated and present themselves with great splendor,
especially the cantata Unser Mund sei voll Lachens. The festivity is underlined by the fact,
that Bach adapted for the entrance chorus of the cantata the first movement of his overture in D major BWV
1069, which will also open the concert evening with timpani and trumpets.
In addition to the expansive works by Bach, two motets by Michael Praetorius will be heard.
Praetorius is known today primarily as the author of numerous songs in the Evangelisches Gesangbuch
, but he left behind a rich oeuvre that encompasses almost all genres of his time
: Masses, motets, hymns, and secular instrumental music. The two motets Ecce
Dominus veniet and Angelus ad pastores ait are from his collection ,,Motectae et psalmi" which
he published in Wolfenbüttel in 1604. Praetorius himself writes that these are
,,Primitiae", but his great artistry is already evident, which was to inspire Bach even
one hundred years later.
