Price: from 5.00€ to 8.00€
Freiburg Cathedral was once painted in color. The special exhibition “Color at the Cathedral” at the Bauhüttenmuseum offers new perspectives on the historic appearance of our landmark.
The Freiburg Cathedral, as we know it today, is primarily a distinctive sandstone structure. However, in the Middle Ages and well into the Baroque period, its appearance was significantly more colorful: the walls were painted red, grout patterns were painted on, and some of the sculptures were vividly painted and gilded.
The special exhibition “Color at the Cathedral” at the Bauhüttenmuseum brings this now largely lost aspect of Freiburg Cathedral’s history back to life. Through research findings, reconstructions, and selected exhibits, visitors can learn more about the historical color scheme and the significance of color for the architecture and impact of medieval religious buildings.
The exhibition invites visitors to rediscover one of Freiburg’s most famous landmarks with fresh eyes and to catch a glimpse of its original, surprisingly colorful appearance.
