Fatimah Asghar: When we were sisters - Freiburger Andruck with Yvonne Eglinger

Book tickets

After the death of their single father, the three sisters Kausar, Aisha and Noreen are left orphans. In "When We Were Sisters", US author Fatimah Asghar explores the relationships and lives of the Muslim sisters in the USA in an unmistakably poetic tone. They search for their own roots, explore their identity and venture new paths away from traditional images of women.

The Freiburg-based translator Yvonne Eglinger has translated the novel into German under the title "Als wir Schwestern waren" (Penguin, 2024). She talks to Asmâa Reuter about her translation work and the work, which was nominated for the National Book Award and won the Carol Shields Prize.
