Felix Mendelssohn had imagined a "through and through" prophet, strong and eager - and yet carried as if by angels' wings. Thus his prophet is a man full of doubts, who at first calls for killing and in the end shows compassion and kindness. The title figure in Mendelssohn's oratorio is not a rigid pillar saint, but a character of flesh and blood. His visionary music, with its depictions of storms, earthquakes, floods of water and fire, throws itself into this Old Testament story with elemental force - but does not forget moments of consolation. Thus ,,Elijah" became the most popular oratorio of the 19th century.
