Film screening of "A Letter to David"
Thursday, 23/10/2025 / 06:00 PM / Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele
With "A Letter to David" (Hebrew: Michtav Le'David), director Tom Shoval returns to the international stage with a deeply moving, personal documentary - a work that could not be more painfully topical. At the center is David Cunio, one of the twin brothers who shaped Shoval's acclaimed 2013 feature film debut Youth (Berlinale Panorama) - a story about two brothers who commit a kidnapping out of desperation. Today, the subject is no longer fiction.
On October 7, 2023, David Cunio and his family are abducted from the kibbutz Nir Oz by Hamas terrorists. His wife and young daughters are released after 52 days. David, on the other hand, is - to this day - a hostage and victim of terror, dead or alive.
Shoval, a long-time companion of the brothers, responds with a cinematic essay - a letter to a friend, an actor, a brother. He touchingly interweaves archive footage, unpublished behind-the-scenes material from Youth, home videos, memories of the Cunio family and interviews with David's twin brother Eitan, who is waiting in Israel for his return.
Director Tom Shoval, who was born in Petah-Tikva in 1981, will be connected live from Israel after the screening to talk about his film and answer questions from the audience.
