Film screening Jacob Israel de Haan: "A Voice out of Time"
Wednesday, 22/10/2025 / 06:00 PM / Friedrichsbau Lichtspiele
The death of Jacob Israel de Haan is celebrated every year by the ultra-orthodox Jews of Neturei Karta in Jerusalem and by the LGBTQ community in Amsterdam. He is a pioneering figure for both. At the beginning of the 20th century, he published the first LGBTQ novel in the Netherlands. He then returned to his Jewish roots, emigrated to Palestine and became a spokesman for the Orthodox community, where he joined the leaders of the Arab world in their fight against Zionism.
Director Zvi Landsmann examines in detail de Haan's development as an author and activist and his significance for the present day, while attempting to find evidence for a previously unproven theory about his murder. Through the discovery of previously unknown archive material and with the support of two remarkably impartial descendants of the alleged murderers, he makes considerable progress.
The director, who has won several international awards for his productions Zvi Landsman will personally travel from Paris for the screening, introduce the film in advance and will be happy to answer questions from the audience afterwards.
