The founding of Freiburg under the dukes of Zähringen is not only of outstanding interest from a local historical perspective, but without question also with regard to the general history of urbanism. In the case of Freiburg, a new princely city founded in the High Middle Ages can be recorded in writing for the first time, whereby, in addition to the city rulers, the merchants who settled here and the citizens emerged as important actors in a remarkably independent manner. This reflects the tremendous dynamics that characterize municipal development in the Middle Ages. - Registration required.
