Freiburg Horizons: Lecture on "The Exponential Society"

Free entry

Advances in artificial intelligence, waves of infection and the climate crisis may seem to have little to do with each other at first glance, but they are often linked. This is because they follow a similar, exponential pattern. At first, this often seems harmless, but then the curve suddenly goes almost vertically upwards, with potentially uncontrollable consequences.

In his new book "Die Exponentialgesellschaft" (Suhrkamp), sociologist Emanuel Deutschmann shows that developments have reached this steep phase in an astounding number of areas. We live in an exponential society, which is why crises and social conflicts are becoming more frequent. Deutschmann will present the book as part of the FRIAS Freiburg Horizons.

Emanuel Deutschmann is a junior professor of sociological theory at the European University of Flensburg. He was awarded the OLB Foundation Science Prize in 2019 for his dissertation "Mapping the Transnational World". In 2023, he received the Hans L. Zetterberg Prize from Uppsala University.

All interested parties are cordially invited. Admission is free.
