Freiburg Environmental Talks

Climate change, biodiversity loss and pandemics: Cities are facing increasing socio-ecological crises. At the same time, municipalities have less and less space at their disposal, making the challenges even greater. The upcoming Freiburg Environmental Talks "Can transformations be planned?" will therefore address the question of the extent to which spatial planning can help with the transition to a sustainable society.

As always, two specialist presentations will serve as an impetus for the subsequent discussion at the get-together:

The first of the two specialist presentations is dedicated to municipal spatial planning. Tanja Mölders, Professor of Environmental Planning and Transformation at the Albert-Ludwigs-University campus Freiburg, will explain how cities can use this tool to promote social change and counteract socio-ecological crises.

Professor Rainer Danielzyk heads the Spatial Planning and Regional Development working group at the Institute of Environmental Planning in the Faculty of Architecture and Landscape at Leibniz Universität Hannover. In his lecture, he sheds light on the contradictory overall situation: on the one hand, politicians have been calling for land-saving targets for many years, while on the other hand, cities need more and more space for affordable housing and renewable energies.

Heiner Schanz, Head of the Chair of Environmental Governance at the University campus Freiburg, will open the evening with a welcome address. Anne Hillenbach from the Energy Agency Regio Freiburg will moderate the event. The presentations will be followed by a short discussion round.

The Freiburg Environmental Talks are aimed at both the general public and all students in Freiburg. Admission from 6.30 pm Duration: approx. 2 hours followed by a get-together Admission free The aim of the "Freiburg Environmental Talks" event series is to make current information and research findings on environmental and climate protection directly and comprehensibly accessible to interested citizens and students. With this format, the city administration and university want to promote the exchange and discourse on important environmental topics between urban society, science and local politics. The event is a cooperation with the Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources at the University campus Freiburg.
