“Islands of Hope in an Ocean of Suffering” – Abbot Nikodemus Schnabel Visits Freiburg

Free entry

On Wednesday, July 1, at 5 p.m., Nikodemus Schnabel, abbot of the Dormition Abbey in Jerusalem and the Tabgha Priory on the Sea of Galilee, will be a guest at the St. Martin Parish Hall, Rathausplatz 3, Freiburg. The international Benedictine community lives and works at two locations in the Holy Land. The monks are involved in peace and social work as well as in ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. “With our two monasteries, we strive to be islands of hope in this ocean of suffering,” says Abbot Nikodemus, describing the community’s mission in light of the current situation in the Holy Land.

Abbot Nikodemus Schnabel, born in Stuttgart in 1978, entered the Benedictine Abbey of Dormitio in Jerusalem in 2003. A scholar with a doctorate in liturgical studies and Eastern Church studies, he teaches at the Theological Study Year in Jerusalem and has been abbot of Dormitio and the Tabgha Priory since 2023.

Following the event, the Dominicans’ evening prayer at 6:30 p.m. will be dedicated especially to a prayer for peace. Afterward, there will be an opportunity for fellowship over wine and bread.

The event, organized by the Catholic Academy of Freiburg, is taking place in collaboration with the KHG Edith Stein Freiburg and the Dominicans at St. Martin’s in Freiburg.

Admission is free. Donations to support Abbot Nikodemus’s work in the Holy Land are welcome. Please register at www.katholische-akademie-freiburg.de.
