In a world where we are confronted with bad news on a daily basis, the story of the South Sudanese refugee girl Gloria shines like a beacon of hope in the face of one of the world's greatest humanitarian disasters. In his first feature-length documentary HOPE - beyond rape, murder and war crimes, Freiburg filmmaker Jochen Isensee, himself a specialist in anaesthesia, tells the moving story of people who have survived unimaginable violence - and yet still find ways of hope, faith and forgiveness. As a doctor and filmmaker, Isensee combines a human perspective with cinematic images and ethical depth. He meets survivors of war crimes, rape and abuse who overcome their deepest traumas - not through retribution, but through the realization that our own fate sometimes makes us the people we really want to be.
