Iakwe or how the rainbow came out of the cellar

Book tickets

Almost exactly on the other side of the globe is a small country consisting of over 1,000 islands and atolls: the Marshall Islands. Numerous art and everyday objects were brought to Germany from there around 120 years ago. Many of them are now in the Museum Natur und Mensch (Natural History Museum) in Freiburg. Who do these objects belong to? How were they used? What stories are hidden in them and who can tell them? With live music and documentary film and audio material, children from Freiburg tell the story of a journey together with an actress. It is a journey through our colonial past and post-colonial present, in which many questions are asked and certainly not all of them can be answered. In terms of content, the play ties in with our production MEIN OPA AUF DEN MARSHALL-INSELN from the 2023/24 season. And by the way: IAKWE means "hello", "love" or "goodbye" in Marshallese, or literally translated: "You are as beautiful as the rainbow."
