Iphigénie en Tauride

In the world of ancient Greece, Iphigenia is under a heavy curse. For generations, the members of her family have been killing each other. Iphigenia is also in danger when her powerful father wants to sacrifice her. It is said that the war against the enemy Troy cannot begin any other way. A goddess rescues the young woman and takes her to the island of Tauris. But the war begins without the sacrifice. The men fight and experience one trauma after another. And Iphigenia struggles for humanity. But first she has to come to terms with her own experiences of guilt, violence and error. Christoph Willibald Gluck wrote powerful music for his opera Iphigénie en Tauride (Iphigenia in Tauris). The unconscious takes audible shape in this music and drives Iphigenia into a corner. For Iphigenia's task is great: can she end the cycle of violence? Can she go from being a rescued child to a rescuing woman? In her production, director Caterina Cianfarini repeatedly focuses on the central moment of the previous story: the attempted murder by Iphigenia's own father. Together with Iphigenia, Caterina Cianfarini looks at the barbaric injustice of human sacrifice from different perspectives. And Gluck's music adds its very own musical sensibility to the ancient world.
