Sunday, 17/03/2024 / 08:00 PM / Martinskirche (St. Martin’s church)
The first performance of Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion (Passio secundum Joannem, BWV 245) took place on Good Friday 1724 in Leipzig. The Freiburg Martinschor is taking its 300th anniversary as an opportunity to perform the work with period instruments. Alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the St. John Passion is the composer's only complete surviving Passion. Bach himself performed and arranged the Passion several times; its sophisticated musical design makes it one of his most moving works and it is undoubtedly one of the greatest settings of the Passion of Jesus Christ in the history of music. The work still touches people even after 300 years.
The soloists are Gunta Smirnova, soprano, Barbara Ostertag, alto, Florian Cramer, tenor, and Manfred Bittner, bass. An orchestra plays on period instruments, conducted by Susanne Falk.
