Juilliard String Quartet
Saturday, 11/11/2023 / 08:00 PM / Freiburg University of Music, Wolfgang Hoffmann Hall
Mirror of Life - Playing in the top league for almost eight decades: What chamber ensemble can make that claim? The Juilliard String Quartet can, and rightly so. Founded in 1946, the string quartet has demonstrated remarkable continuity throughout its long and rich history, despite changes in lineup. Carrying on the fire is surely one of the reasons why the now legendary ensemble is still not flirting with retirement after winning five Grammys and a lifetime achievement award. When the traditional New York ensemble, which last performed at Albert in 2004, returns to Freiburg in 2023 after a careful renewal of the lineup, one can expect top form.
The program will not be stingy either, but a special kind of summit meeting will be staged: Schubert's and Beethoven's last string quartets, written only a few months apart in 1826, make a surprising simultaneity of the non-simultaneous audible and are given a counterpoint in Tyson Davis' latest quartet. I believe that my music should be as emotionally complex as we are," says the young American, who sees his music as a mirror of society: "What happens in daily life and interactions with people in our society are the main source of my inspiration."
