Works by Alessandro Scarlatti, Domenico Scarlatti and others

Alessandro Scarlatti was primarily an opera composer and, together with his oratorios and cantatas, an extremely prolific advocate of vocal music. He is said to have left around 800 secular cantatas for one or two chamber voices. He dedicated them to "connoisseurs and lovers", an aristocratic audience in Rome who even went among the librettists themselves. Born in Sicily, he died 300 years ago, on October 25, 1725, in Naples. Shortly before his death, he met a musician who still had his career ahead of him: Joseph Joachim Quantz, flute teacher to Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.
