Jeanne Dielman, 23, quai du commerce, 1080 Bruxelles - Chantal Akerman - BE/F 1975 - OmU

Currently voted "best film of all time" by "Sight and Sound", "Jeanne Dielman" depicts three days in the life of a widowed wife and mother played by Delphine Seyrig. Everything in her daily life is formalized and emotionless. While earning her living as a casual prostitute, she goes shopping, cooks and does the dishes. Changes and inconveniences such as overcooked potatoes or a malfunctioning stamp machine deeply disturb her. Her daily life, which finally begins to falter, finally erupts in the murder of one of her clients. Whether this can be interpreted simply as madness or as a reaction to decades of patriarchal oppression is up to the viewers themselves.
