Art at the altar

Free entry

From March 9 to April 18, the artwork "Hungertuch" by Freiburg artist Carola Faller-Barris will be exhibited in the church of St. Georg, Basler Landstr. 102 in Freiburg - St. Georgen. The vernissage will take place on Sunday, March 9, at 10.45 a.m. following the church service in the church hall. The vernissage will be accompanied by music and a talk with the artist. From this point onwards, the large-format linen cloth designed with grains of wheat will be installed in the choir room of the church, providing a new visual impression of the space.

Every Sunday, the accompanying program includes sermons by various people who deal with the hunger cloth, interactive approaches and thoughts on the hunger cloth at various locations in the church, a crawling and reconciliation service as well as a musical devotion by the St. Georg church choir.

The hunger cloth ties in with an old tradition from the Middle Ages in churches. During Lent, the (high) altar was covered with a cloth. This was intended to reduce the visual impressions during this time, to concentrate on the essentials and to draw the senses to the story of Jesus' Passion. The medieval Lenten cloth is now once again hung in Freiburg Minster every year during this time.

The artist Carola Faller-Barris lives and works as a freelance artist in Freiburg. She has had numerous exhibitions and projects. Her most recent solo exhibition was "Weiter werden" (Moving on) at St. Josefs-Hospital in Bochum. Her works include drawings, objects and installations. With this work, she builds on this tradition of simplicity and develops it further in terms of content for the church space and for people.

The "Hungertuch" project attempts to provide new approaches to the time of Lent and the church space as art. The project is organized by the St. Georg parish team and financially supported by the Archbishop Hermann Foundation.
