Laetitia Lenel: A dear woman - reading and conversation with Julia Wolrab in the Counter Words series

Book tickets

The "Gegenworte" series moves into the newly opened Documentation Center for National Socialism (DZNS): In her debut novel "Eine liebe Frau" (Gutkind, 2024), Laetitia Lenel tells the story of a single day in London in 1963, a day on which Marianne looks back on her life. As a young woman, she wanted to be a pianist. Together with her childhood friend Lotte, she had big plans. But while Lotte became a famous painter in the 1920s, everything turned out differently for Marianne.

Marianne, whose real name was Annemarie, is the author's great-grandmother. Annemarie's sister-in-law Bertha, who appears in the novel as Martha, was deported from Freiburg to Gurs in 1940: Her story is part of the permanent exhibition at the DZNS.

Lenel's eloquent novel shows what a society expects of women - and what they allow themselves. She talks to Julia Wolrab, director of the DZNS, about late self-empowerment, family research and the transformative power of art.
