Land of No Return

Land of No Return

Like many of Marina Davydova's works, Land of No Return is also influenced by her own life experiences. It is about how the identity and cultural conflicts in the collapsed Soviet empire affected the lives, thoughts and feelings of the individual people involved. In this way, abstract historical processes are given a face and different perspectives and attitudes become visible. The plot of Land of No Return spans almost 40 years - from the end of the 1980s, shortly before the end of the Soviet Union, to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. From Baku to Moscow, from Moscow to Germany, the play follows the path of various people in exile over decades; the problem of the universal search for identity and belonging shines through the personal fates. The reading was previously performed with great success in Salzburg and at the TRANSART Festival in Bolzano; the rights to the first performance are held by the Residenztheater Munich. Reading: Marina Weis (Berlin) and actors* from Theater Freiburg Moderation: Prof. Dr. Elisabeth Cheauré Translation: Dr. Jurij Lileev
