The story of The Queen of Spades by Alexander Pushkin became famous primarily through Tchaikovsky's musical setting. However, Pushkin, who was stylized into a kind of national icon ("Pushkin - our one and only"), especially in Soviet times, is also viewed critically today in post-Soviet countries and under the prism of post-colonialism. The LITERARY SALON addresses this question as well as Pushkin's literary merits as a seismograph of his time. With his protagonist Hermann (it is no coincidence that he has a German name), themes such as greed for social advancement, the phenomenon of spiritualism and, last but not least, the game of love are dealt with.
