What does it mean to live "together"? In his lecture "Living together", the Tanzanian-British writer and literary scholar Abdulrazak Gurnah addresses the question of how respectful coexistence can succeed under conditions of cultural and social difference. He will also focus on the role of literature and its contribution to mutual understanding.

Gurnah was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2021. His works, including Paradise (1994) and Afterlives (2020), deal with topics such as migration, colonial history and identity. He is Professor Emeritus of English and Postcolonial Literature at the University of Kent.

With his lecture, Gurnah is setting a special accent in the traditional series of Hermann Staudinger Lectures, in which Nobel Prize winners have been speaking at the University campus Freiburg since 2008. Having previously mainly invited laureates from the natural sciences, Gurnah is the first winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.
