The Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, whose works pay homage to the great forms and techniques of the Baroque era and are dedicated to the famous Presti-Lagoya duo, provides the musical framework for the concert: The Fuga elegiaca was written as a reaction to the tragic death of the virtuoso Ida Presti and is characterized by strongly rhythmic figures in the prelude, which are taken up again in the fugue to fade away gently after intense drama. In the Sonatina canonica Op. 196, contrapuntal techniques such as canon and imitation are combined with classical elements.
The transparent movement of Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas brings the dialog between the guitars to the fore, while Manuel María Ponce's dance movements Gavota, Pavana and Minuetto and the Preludio y fuga sobre un tema de Händel demonstrate his extraordinary ability to combine baroque compositional techniques, neo-romantic means of expression and elements of the lyricism of Mexican art song in a unique way. César Franck's Prélude, Fugue et Variation Op. 18, originally for organ, is characterized by a clearly structured cyclical structure and a balanced combination of formal rigour and lyrical expression.
