A must-see - The dungeons of the Albert Ludwig University campus Freiburg

Free entry

A dungeon was a student prison. And anyone who now believes that universities deprived students of their freedom in a terrible way... is right! At least that was true for the first few centuries. Later, however, this punishment became more of a distinction, the achievement of which was gladly demonstrated in word and deed. Every self-respecting student around 1900 had to immortalize themselves at least once during their studies in the guest book on the dungeon wall.

Even today, you still have to have been to a Karzer, because the former Karzer in Freiburg have a unique treasure to offer. Once a month on every second Sunday, we push back the heavy iron bars, open the gate and invite you to an open guided tour of the dungeons, to which individuals or small groups are also very welcome!
