Physics and depth psychology: do they go together?

Physics and depth psychology: do they go together?

Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) and Marie-Louise von Franz (1915-1998), an important colleague of his, were in close contact with the physicist and Nobel Prize winner Wolfgang Pauli (1900-1958). He made numerous important contributions to quantum mechanics, quantum field theory and the general theory of relativity. Due to intense dreams, which in Jung's view contained archetypal elements, Pauli underwent personal analysis, first with Jung's student Erna Rosenbaum and then with Jung himself. Over many years, Pauli and Jung discussed not only dreams, but also numerous topics relating to science, philosophy, religion, psychology and alchemy. This resulted in central writings on synchronicity as a principle of acausal connections (Jung), on the influence of archetypal ideas on the formation of scientific theories in Kepler (Pauli) and on the relationship between depth psychology and physics (Marie-Louise von Franz). What they all have in common is the desire to show and understand the connections that exist between material-physical and mental-spiritual-psychological phenomena and to reveal an underlying unity in the cosmos. The seminar introduces the thoughts of Jung, Paul and von Franz on the subject and discusses the consequences for questions of physics, psychology, parapsychology and religion(s). The focus is particularly on the concept of synchronicity.
