Farewell, consolation and remembrance are the central themes of this concert program with treasures from the song literature of the trio of Johannes Brahms, Clara and Robert Schumann. The works performed were written in response to losses in the lives of the composers.
Johannes Brahms' Vier ernste Gesänge was composed shortly before the composer's death and is the result of an intensive examination of transience and redemption. The occasion for this composition was the death of Brahms' long-time friend Clara Schumann.
Clara Schumann dedicated her Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann to her husband as a birthday present. A year later, Brahms composed his own variations on the same theme and dedicated them to Clara - a sign of his close friendship and at the same time a tribute to his mentor Robert, who was already seriously ill at the time.
Robert Schumann wrote his Six Poems by Nikolaus Lenau and Requiem as a tribute to the revered poet after receiving news of his death.
A selection of Dvořák's Biblical Songs fits harmoniously into the program and complements it with festive verve.
