Security without the USA?

The sky fell over the Europeans with two thunderbolts at the beginning of 2025: first came the "divorce speech" by US Vice President JD Vance at the Munich Security Conference - in front of many open-mouthed partners in the audience. Then came the cockfight in the Oval Office between US President Trump and Ukrainian President Zelensky, which ended with the debacle of suspended military aid against the Russian invasion. And now? Dr. Markus Kaim, one of Germany's leading experts in the field of foreign and security policy, joins two highly qualified colleagues to shed light on the effects of a possible fundamental change in the transatlantic security architecture. The central question is: How can Germany shape its security strategy and structure if the USA reduces its military protection function in Europe - or even stops it altogether? Our panel of experts will discuss the dramatic geopolitical challenges resulting from a drastically reduced US presence in the global security structure. What alternatives are there to America's eighty years of continuous deployment as Western Europe's guarantor of protection? How can European defense be strengthened quickly? What role does Germany, with its traditional West German pacifism, play in a new security order?
