Songs of the Land

The vocal soundscape of the two sisters Tiffany Kuliktana Ayalik and Kayley Inuksuk Mackay aka PIQSIQ is based on Kattajaq (Inuit throat singing), which was banned for a long time. The duo's style is always characterized by the darkness and haunting beauty of the North. The singers' roots lie in the regions of Kitikmeot and Kivalliq (Nunavut) in Canada. They grew up in Yellow Knife (Northwest Territories), where maintaining their connection to Inuit culture was often a challenge. Kattajaq is much more than a musical expression, it is also a radical, political act of revitalizing their cultural heritage. With ancient traditional songs and ghostly new compositions, they captivate their listeners with the infinity of possible answers to the question of the meaning of life. In their live performances, they combine modern musical elements and techniques with the original throat singing, creating a spherical, almost magical atmosphere. No two shows are the same, as the duo also develop completely spontaneous compositions for each of their performances, which are unique to each stage.
