SWR Kultur Forum: Behind the Facades - The Nazi Era and the End of the War in Freiburg
Wednesday, 07/05/2025 / 07:00 PM / Documentation Center National Socialism
Freiburg during the Nazi era was by no means the idyllic and ideal world that many people wanted to remember after the war. On the contrary, the city consistently implemented the National Socialist agenda early on and presented itself as the model city of the new regime. 80 years after the end of the Second World War, the new Documentation Center for National Socialism Freiburg takes a look behind the facades of the Black Forest city: How involved were the citizens and institutions in the Nazi crimes? How did the population in the region experience the end of the war? What happened to perpetrators and victims after 1945? And what lessons does history have to offer in the face of rising right-wing populism and growing social polarization? As part of the SWR Kultur Forum programme, Gregor Papsch (SWR) discusses these questions with the historian Dr. Heinrich Schwendemann, the head of the Freiburg branch of the Baden-Württemberg State Agency for Civic Education, Prof. Dr. Michael Wehner, and Julia Wolrab, Scientific Director of the Documentation Centre for National Socialism. The event will be recorded by SWR. Participation is free of charge. The number of participants is limited. You will need a free ticket for admission. These are available in the online store.
