The Department of Islamic Studies at the University campus Freiburg is hosting a panel discussion on the current situation in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime on Thursday, December 19 from 6 to 8 pm.
The fall of the regime has provoked a wide range of reactions, from joy at the ousting of the dictator to cautionary voices warning of an Islamist reign of terror.
In fact, the future of Syria raises many questions after years of bloody conflict: How will the balance of power in the country shape up after the transfer of power? What kind of political transformation is now taking place? What role do regional and international players play in the reorganization of the political system? And what prospects are there for reconstruction, social reconciliation and the creation of a stable peace?
The panel with Kutayba Al Kanatri, Dr. Olmo Gölz, Prof. Dr. Johanna Pink offers a diverse and interdisciplinary perspective on the developments in Syria. The panelists will discuss the historical background and the course of the conflict, draw a differentiated picture of the current challenges and opportunities for a future Syria and respond to questions from the audience.
